On 8 October, 2019, Joe Stoltman and Michael Solem presented a proposal for the international geography assessment at the 2019 IEA General Assembly in Slovenia. The IEA GA consists of representatives from ministries of education, known as National Research Coordinators (NRCs), who make decisions about IEA policies and future IEA projects.

IEA is currently surveying the GA members to ascertain their interest in the geography assessment.
